“10 Things I Hate About You” a Romantic Comedy that will Bring You Back to the 90’s

Gil Junger’s high school romantic comedy, “10 Things I Hate About You,” based on a William Shakespeare play was funny and enjoyable, despite being a little predictable.

Two sisters, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) and Katarina (Julia Stiles), were raised by a very paranoid father who doesn’t typically allow them to date. However, after fuss from Bianca, he decides that she can date if Katarina does. Katarina is an unpopular senior who is notorious among her classmates for harassing teachers, being extremely aggressive on the soccer field and never dating.

The movie is set a few weeks prior to the prom, when a new student arrives. Cameron James (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) sees Bianca on his first day of class and immediately sets his sights on her. Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) is also interested in Bianca and gets tricked into paying Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to take Katarina out. This is when things start to get interesting.

Obviously, Kat soon finds out that Patrick is getting paid to take her out causing issues with their relationship while at the high school prom.

Junger does a great job when first portraying Kat and Patrick. They both are very unpopular and seem to be very unlikeable people. However, as the movie goes on it’s evident how many rumors have been made up about them.

At the end of the movie, Kat had to read her sonnet, similar to that of William Shakespeare, aloud to the class. Her poem, “10 Things I Hate About You”, reveals how she still loves Patrick. Patrick then surprises her with a guitar that she had been wanting. He bought it using the money he was paid to take her out. Of course, things worked out for a happily ending.

“10 Things I Hate About You” takes William Shakespeare’s play to create a romantic comedy that portrays a variety of stereotypes. There are the classic nerds, the popular people and more.

Thanks to Junger, this movie is a hit because Stiles and Ledger work so well together, and the comical bits are placed perfectly throughout the movie. This movie is very funny and takes a great spin on romance.
