It’s Time to Start Shaking Hands Again with Handshake

Handshake is a new app on Briar Cliff’s campus, though it is not new to the employment market.

“Handshake bridges the gap between social media and Indeed,” according to the Director of Personal and Professional Development, Nicole McGlauflin.

“The primary purpose of Handshake is to get students jobs for now and for the future”, McGlauflin says. “Students with a completed profile page are 80% more likely to be contacted”.

Handshake is not new to the job market or search, but it is just now reaching Briar Cliff as of this Fall.

“Handshake is the go-to place for students to find jobs. Everyone has equal opportunity. This is how we hire now – from faculty through to students,” says the Director of Human Resources at The Cliff, Cheryl Hansen.

The app has made Hansen’s life easier.

“The process would be a lot longer without Handshake,” Hansen says.

One student who took advantage of the new app is Charged employee, Sonja Rao. Rao, a senior at the cliff, found out about the app via an email sent to students.

“It was easy to use and I could filter to find jobs that I wanted and fit my schedule,” Rao says. “I have been here for four years and in the past, it was a little harder to find jobs as some departments didn’t really promote openings, but now it’s a lot easier with everything in one place.”

Nicole McGlauflin has played a large role installing Handshake as the new hiring system at Briar Cliff this fall. Handshake is a powerful hiring website that allows students to apply for jobs on and off campus.
